Global Goals

The Global Goals are a list of 17 goals that were agreed by world leaders in 2015. As a society, we have decided to make the goals below our main focus. You can find out more on the Global Goals website.

Goal 2:
Zero Hunger

This goal aims to end world hunger in a sustainable way. To ensure that everyone has access to safe and nutritious food, we need to implement policies to make the way in which we produce food more sustainable to support current and future generations. This includes investing in agricultural research to determine the best possible way to do this. Our society is passionate about working with the university to reduce food waste, compost and introduce more sustainable options across campus. Click below to learn more about this goal.

Sustainable Energy

Goal 7: Affordable & Clean Energy

This goal focuses on providing sustainable energy for everyone. It aims to increase the percentage of energy gathered from renewable sources globally by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and ensure that the energy is being used in the most efficient way possible. As a society, we have already lobbied the university to stop investing in fossil fuels, and it is important to us to make sure that the university is using energy from sustainable sources in efficient ways, where possible. Goal 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities

This goal is about accommodating our growing population sustainably. It focuses on sustainable city planning for increasing urbanisation to ensure that everyone can live in a sustainable environment. Other important parts of this goal are access to affordable and sustainable transport, and access to green spaces for community members. As a society one way in which we are working towards this goal is through our #WeeklyWalk Instagram feature, encouraging people to explore green spaces near them.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production

This goal is focused on ensuring that the way we produce and consume goods becomes more sustainable. It covers everything from reducing food waste to sustainable tourism to discouraging fast fashion. As a society, we are working on this goal in different ways, from our zero-waste shop in the SU to bringing you tasty (and student-budget friendly) vegetarian and vegan recipes on our blog to help you reduce your meat consumption. Goal 13:
Climate Action

This goal aims to take urgent action against climate change, and combat its negative effects. One of its focuses is encouraging thought about climate change into policies and planning. As a society, this goal is really important to us and we aim to raise awareness about climate change and what we can do about it. We want to work with the university to ensure that it is considering sustainable practices, and we are also passionate about lobbying Leicestershire Council to ensure that it is meeting its environmental goals.

Goal 15:
Life on Land

This goals covers the protection of animals and plants across the globe. It focuses on promoting biodiversity through protecting endangered species and working to end deforestation. One way in which this is achieved is through encouraging governments to integrate the values of biodiversity into planning at all levels. Another major initiative that is associated with this goal is to combat global poaching and trafficking of animals by educating local communities and working with them to pursue more sustainable careers.
