Our (Amended) Plans for This Year

Welcome to this post, where we are outlining our plans as a society for the coming semester. We had so many exciting events lined up this year, such as clothes and book swaps, debates, social litterpicks, quizzes and so much more. However, in light of the COVID-19 situation we have had to adapt our events. But not to worry! We have been working hard, and we are planning lots of fun online events which I will outline in this post. We also hope to start some in person, social-distanced events following university and government guidelines later in the semester. We completely understand that you might be nervous about joining a new society at this time, so we want to give you an indication of the sort of things we will be doing!

Give it a go session

Most notably, we are running a ‘Give it a go’ session for our society on Microsoft teams on the 6th of October 2020. In this session, our committee members will be available to answer any questions you have about the society, or even just to have a general chat about sustainability and our role in the university! We will also be hosting a Kahoot Quiz, so come along and test out your environmental knowledge. This is also a great opportunity for our freshers to meet like-minded people and make friends.

Debates

We are planning to host debates regarding sustainability topics through Teams and Zoom. We will be discussing a wide range of issues such as the impact of COVID-19 on sustainability practices, battling throwaway culture and, of course, climate change. We are hoping to collaborate with other societies, such as the Vegetarian and Vegan Society, and the Debate Society to bring fresh new perspectives and meet new people.

External Speaker Events

Similar to our debates, we will be inviting external speakers to talk to our society members through Teams/Zoom about sustainability locally, in education and around the world. This will be an exciting opportunity to learn more about the topic, whilst also being able to ask personalised questions to our guest speakers.

Quizzes

We will be running online quizzes frequently, as a fun way to keep up to date with the ever-changing evolution of the climate crisis and sustainability efforts around the world. This will also be a great way to socialise with your fellow society members, and bring along friends to introduce them to sustainability at UoL. There might even be prizes for winning teams!

Cook-alongs

As a part of our mission to reduce our carbon footprint, we advocate reducing meat and dairy consumption. As a fun way to implement this and share our favourite meat-free and dairy-free recipes, we will be hosting online ‘cook-along’ sessions, where we will post an ingredient list a week before and invite you to join us in cooking sustainable meals.

We hope that this has given you an insight into the kinds of things you can expect from the society this year, and we hope that you will join us as we strive for a more sustainable future and have fun doing so!

If you do have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us on any of our social medias and we will do our best to answer them!
